Folds of Memory 1
My fascination with the narrative of memory in folds and pleats suggests a slightly uncanny uneasiness and feelings of vulnerability and insecurity. Modes of thought are twisted and turned, stretched and folded. My work starts with the making of a painted representation, eventually becoming emphasised as a valued thing in itself, rather than just a depiction of the chosen subject. The vagaries of memory are referenced, using deconstruction and reconstruction in the form of paintings. They are not about fixed moments or coherent accounts of things remembered, but rather memories distorted and embedded in the folds and pleats, referencing and re-enacting something recalled, partially glimpsed yet deeply felt.
