Painting defines the mediation between the artist and the audience — the object under consideration (canvas) connecting the artist's mind with the viewer's. It also touches on the tension between a two-dimensional surface and the push into illusionistic space. Painting, despite the depth of illusionistic form, is a depiction of a space no deeper than the thickness of the surface. So we gaze upon a rendering of two flat surfaces; one, the subject suspended and illusionistic (plant) and the other tightly stretched and covered in paint (canvas).
